George H. Mead (1863-1931) is positioned as 1 of the founders of the SI (Symbolic interactionism) perspective in sociology. Mead described the social self  its development through childhood. According to Mead children are eventually able to take on different roles  make a basic distinction between the self  the other. They must also develop a complex understanding of the multiple roles others play, for they must be able to recognize and anticipate how others will behave in a given situation.
