French chemist and politician Guyton de Morveau set flight for Dijon, France on an experimental trip. Steering the balloon's course involved the use of oars, sails and ropes and paddles. Similar to Guyot's sailing balloon, the construction of de Morveau's aircraft lacked steam or human propulsive power and was considered a failure.

French aviator Auguste Severo died in a sudden and tragic hot air balloon accident in Paris. The vessel shown in this postcard, named "The Pax", burst into flames caused by a spark from the balloon's motor. Severo’s awful fate:
