The first Union soldier killed by a Confederate soldier was Thornsbury Bailey Brown; he was killed May 22nd 1861 in Taylor County, Virginia.

7th West Virginia Cavalry.  After WVA became a state in the midst of the Civil War in 1863, my great great grandfather Greenberry Buchanan became a soldier in this Union Calvary. I don't know who these soldiers in the picture are, but I'm sure he looked much the same.  As a child I often visited his grave on the top of a mountain. It had a WV 7th Calvary marker on it.
