A halo develops when light enters one side of a columnar ice crystal and exits through another side. The light is refracted when it enters the ice crystal and once again when it leaves the ice crystal.
This is a halo -- the radius of the inner ring to the Sun. It's the most frequently observed of the circular halos. Randomly oriented, hexagonal ice crystals in cirrus clouds are responsible for its formation.
