HAWAIIAN MONK SEAL STATUS — Classified Critically Endangered (CR) on IUCN Red List & Appendix I of CITES. They were killed in the 1800s for their meat, hides & oil. Habitat was disturbed by bird guano & feather collectors. Despite protection, their numbers continue to decline an average of 3%/year between 1985 and 1999. Lack of food results in high juvenile mortality. Marine debris entanglement, shark predation, ‘mobbing’ behavior by males & human violence also play a part in their decline.

The IUCN Red List of Threatened Species™ is widely recognized as the most comprehensive, objective global approach for evaluating the conservation status of plant and animal species.
