This is a classic Doo Wop record. The song was originally released on Bobby Robinson's Whirlin Disc label, but was reissued in 1957 under Port, which was co-owned by Robinson with Jerry Blaine. These guys also inspired Earl Lewis & The Channels, who recorded their classic song "The Closer You Are" on the same exact day, with Lewis being inspired...
