Brigadier Waffen-SS Kurt "Panzer" Meyer was the recipient of the Knight's Cross of the Iron Cross with Oak Leaves and Swords. Upon promotion on 16 June 1944 at the age of 33 years, Meyer, man popular with the troops, became one of the youngest divisional commanders in the German Army during the Second World War. After 1945, he was imprisoned for 10 years and released in 1955. In poor health, he died in 1961.

Operation Anthropoid was the code name for the assassination attempt on SS-Obergruppenführer & General der Polizei Reinhard Heydrich. The operation was carried out in Prague on 27 May 1942 after having been prepared by the British SOE with the approval of the Czechoslovak government-in-exile. Although only wounded in the attack, he died from his injuries on 4 June 1942. His death led to a wave of vicious reprisals, including the destruction of villages & killing of civilians.
