Coccolithophores are microscopic algae that first appeared 220 million years ago, and flourished during the cretaceous period.  They produce peculiar plates called cocoliths out of calcium carbonate, and  incorporate them into an external shell.  They constantly remove carbon from the atmosphere as they die and sink to the ocean floor, producing chalk.  This is an important feedback system in the global carbon cycle. I can't believe this is a quilt!  Tokyo International Quilt Festival 2008    This is a detail of the quilt. The sand was all beaded and the ocean was many layers of sheer with fish on every layer so it look 3D!

Im addicted to stitching coffee and watching Poldark. (Who knew ethical land management in the late 1700s could be so riveting!?) Im a gym rat love the mountains…
