Chavin de Huantar, Peru.- Home to one of the oldest major cultures in Peru, Chavin was a former ritual and pilgrimage centre from 1500-500 B.C., pre-dating Inca society by over 2,000 years. The architecture embodies a complex of terraces and plazas surrounded by major platforms of dressed stone. Extensive carved stone decoration portrays exotic human-animal hybrid figures, referred to as the “Chavín Horizon” temple system.
