The notorious 1920s gangster Squizzy Taylor met his beautiful accomplice and wife, Ida Pender, at the Palais de Danse. Originally it would have been the dance hall located on the current Palais Theatre site and then in 1925 the new Palais de Danse next door. One of Melbourne’s best known highsteppers and jazzers, Squizzy was frequently seen in smart suits at the dance hall. Ida Pender was known as ‘Jazz Baby’, because of her obsession with dancing at the Palais de Danse.
