Victorian Railways, Train Crash, Melbourne 1988

Scanned the negative in for this recently. One of those wtf moments. Walking through a Melbourne suburb back in 1988 I stumbled on this scene. Someone had bought the front of a S Class Diesel locomotive from Victorian Railways (I just googled that bit), put it in their front garden and arranged the roof and the wall to look like it had smashed through their front living room. 10/10 for effort!

Of course VR stands for Victorian Railways and not my father's mate Victor Richards. My father invented his mate when I asked why there was a VR…

The Williamstown car ferry provided the only crossing of the Lower Yarra (to the Port Melbourne side) until the opening of the West Gate Bridge (under construction in the background). On the Port Melbourne side the land was swampy and unpleasant smelling.
