Keeping the flu away, 1919

Balmain Post Office staff don masks during the Spanish flu epidemic of 1918–19. The death toll from the influenza pandemic exceeded the losses incurred during World War I, and had a devastating effect on communities already decimated by war. Between 20 and 50 million people worldwide lost their lives to the flu. Despite strict quarantine measures, the Spanish flu reached Australia in January 1919, and eventually some 12,000 Australians perished. This photograph comes from the collection of…

Old Glen Innes Road – A Trip Back in Time

I was back in Dalmorton again, a ghost town about an hour-and-a-half south-west of Grafton in northern NSW. A few buildings still stand, old wooden shells harbouring ghostly stories of another life. The silence here is palpable - an eerie, misplaced sense that makes it more beautiful in a way. Like many such towns, Dalmorton flourished during the gold rush fever of the 1850s and ‘60s. When the gold ran dry, people slowly decamped until the town became forlorn and forgotten. Once home to 3000…

Under the Clocks Flinders Street Station Print

A rendezvous under the clocks at Flinders Street Station is about as Melbourne as you can get. These heritage listed clocks are so familiar, and so beloved by Melbourne's locals, that their sudden disappearance behind a bank of digital clocks in the mid '80s was met with a tide of public outrage so enormous that the originals were replaced within days. Harper and Charlie make original retro prints celebrating the culture, architecture and design of Melbourne and Australia. Inspired by art…
