Edith Cowan was elected to the Western Australian Legislative Assembly in 1921 and was the first woman elected to any Australian Parliament (though women in Australia had already had the vote for two decades).
Charmian Clift (30 August 1923 – 8 July 1969) was an Australian writer and essayist. Clift has a special place in Australian letters and it’s always interesting to read her work. She was not a poet, but she was Australia's Sylvia Plath, remembered now as much for her tragic suicide as for her writing. She was also Australia's Ingrid Bergman, who scandalised her conservative times by having an affair with a married man.
