The Cybelean cult was brought to Rome during the Second Punic War (218-201 BCE). During this time the Carthiginian general Hannibal was posing a serious threat to Rome. The Sibylline books (books of prophecy) predicted that Italy would be saved by an Idaean mother of Pessinus; to many this meant Cybele.
