The Stylist's Guide to the Globe

The Society inc by Sibella Court | Gypsy Creek

Gypsy Creek

Once upon a time in the forest stood a welcoming house that could fly. It floated above the trees and was attached by thick rope made from spider web, along with a Green Gypsy caravan where a young girl who could read your future lived. This is how I imagine Gypsy Creek to be, like the title of a fable or fairytale, but a stay that you can actually experience, created by my friend & interior designer Louella Boîtel-Gill.

Karen McCartney’s French Retreat | The Society Inc by Sibella Court

Karen McCartney's French Retreat

My friend & author Karen McCartney who I have known since very early on in my styling career has converted a French barn into a relaxed holiday home, not far from the village of Duras in the South-West of France. Karen describes the house as “set on a small hill, overlooking fields of sunflowers, and has the rusticity of a barn combined with a mix of vintage items and contemporary” – making for an idyllic stay in the Aquitaine region.

The Stylist's Suitcase: Paris

Although I've been visiting my favourite museums & ateliers for 20 years I continue to be seduced by the most romantic city in the world. Evocative streetscapes, decorative detailing, awe-inspiring displays & vistas surrounding breathtaking medicinal herb gardens. During my last visit to Paris I let curiosity lead the way & filled my suitcase with curiosities from foraging at the flea markets at Rue des Rosiers, heady small batch perfumes & exotic essential oils from Buly 1803 to name just a…

When I settled on Cabinets of Curiosities and Collecting to be the theme for The Society inc Newspaper #4, one of the first shops that came to mind was Seasonal Concepts, an emporium of wonders housed in an original Georgian two storey residence, still with its flagstone floor and lath & plaster walls. Happy World Book Day | Memories From the Books I've Created

Soon after moving back from New York in 1998, to Sydney, I was encouraged by my dear friend, Donna Hay, to make a book. I had recently purchased a beautiful 1860s 2 storey corner store in Paddington, so I chatted with my brother Chris Court, an outstanding James Beard awarded photographer (yes proud sister) and we decided to shoot some content.

I try to celebrate the smallest of details in every room of my home; it could be the paint finish, hardware & fixings, materials that will age beautifully, cloth light cord, objects both found or newly crafted. Creating A Waiters Station

With all the lovely new furniture pieces in the shop it's time to get creative with how to make the most of them. As one not opposed to a good waiters station, I thought these chest of drawers could make for a quick and easy bar set up! It is such a simple way to add a relaxed party vibe to any space, and once the celebration is over the drawers can simply be used for a beside table, kitchen spice drawers, an entrance or hall table.

DRAWERS | old shop, museum & library furniture | glass-fronted milliners drawers | wooden filing cabinets | map & plan drawers | letterpress drawers | pigeonholes | apothecary drawers I bought my first set of labelled drawers at auction when I was in my late teens. I have always enjoyed organising my collections in my own way, giving them all a place to live, in some state of organised chaos and accessible when required.

Special Edition Smith-made Range with Colo Forge

For over 10 years I have woven my blacksmith Saul of Colo Forge’s skill set into every interior design project. Over this period of time we have grown a finely in tune sensibility for each other’s favourite material and the mechanics of the other’s mind. It seemed like a natural progression then to collaborate together on a hardware range which celebrates our love of metalsmithing and the fabrication of beautiful things.

Using Leather on Your Cupboards & Doors | The Society Inc by Sibella Court

Material Palette | Using Leather on Your Cupboards & Doors

Like many of the materials which are incorporated into our products, leather patinas beautifully. We use raw unsealed leather which is soft to the touch & carries a nude blush tone for the first few weeks. The more the leather is handled the darker it becomes, eventually taking on a beautifully worn-in tan colour reminiscent of functional & durable leather wrapped handles often seen hanging in craftsmen's workshops.

Changing Up Your Drawers & Cupboards | The Society Inc by Sibella Court

Changing Up Your Drawers & Cupboards

You don’t need to completely renovate or buy new furniture to change the look of a space, sometimes it is simply a matter of working with what you already have but editing, revamping & styling in new ways. Don’t underestimate the ability of the smallest details to shift the feel, ambience and story of an environment. What may seem insignificant in the grand scheme of a room can often trigger a thought, a sense, a memory; I always carry this concept with me when it comes to working on an…

When it comes to designing interiors, I have a library of paint colours ready to draw on and work with to map out a palette or visual story that helps shape and embellish the overarching character of a space.
