Metti dolls, These Papua New Guinea costume dolls are the dolls of Metti that I love to collect. They were sent from Australia to Port Moresby and then distributed to the PNG highlands to different villages to be dressed. The dolls were sold to tourists.
Introducing 'Bindi' by Metti The collection I am showing here are Australian dolls. These dolls were made by Metti, a South Australian doll company that's still trading today under the name of Netta (remember the children’s lamps / night lights? made by Netta). Bindi (first made in 1969) the Aboriginal girl doll would be the most popular of the Metti / Netta dolls and she is still in production today although she looks different and I'm not sure she is still known as Bindi?
Metti doll, plain compared to the other PNG dolls. This doll is my favourite and even though she doesn't have the elaborate dress and markings as the other dolls she was highly sought after at auction and I paid more for her than any of my other PNG dolls.
