Tecoma Protests

Tecoma is a township in the Dandenong Ranges (AKA "the hills") near Melbourne, AUS. Most of the hills is a National Park, for decades it's been a haven for city folk to visit, as well as a wonderful place to live. Sounds idyllic? Not any more..a 24 hour fast food store is to be built, regardless of the residents' and local Shire's objections.Tecoma & its friends continue to fight this decision. Here's some words, images & music from that struggle. More info? burgeroff.org change.org/burgeroff

One of the many stories the GUARDIAN (UK) has posted about the Tecoma Community v McDonalds battle. " Why my little community is saying no to McDonald's Tecoma residents have made it clear: we do not want McDonald's in our small community. Our ongoing fight has brought the best out of all of us..."

Why my peaceful little town is saying no to giant McDonald's

Garry Muratore: Tecoma residents have made it clear: we do not want McDonald's in our small community. Our ongoing fight has brought the best out of all of us

Mountain Song - Holly Near Tecoma's Roof Angel held off the demolition of the Hazlevale Dairy for 8 days by sitting on its roof. This is one of the song she sang while up there, although she was recorded (on a mobile phone, I think) the audio is not clear, so I have pinned this version. The words are so fitting for Tecoma.

The wonderful Mountain Song by Holly Near, a protest anthem that still resonates today.

After an audited survey showed that 9 out of 10 in Tecoma (Australia) did not want a McDonald's in their town, this quaint village in Victoria's lush green Dandenong Ranges, fought an amazin

Protesters and police at the Tecoma McDonald's site, where a woman has been removed from the roof this morning. McDonalds hired 50 police officers to come in at 4:00 a.m., in pre-dawn darkness to arrest a lone 24 year old protester. What's next? Water cannons?

Musicals as we know them today have their roots in opera. An opera is a dramatic presentation in which the story is told through music, similar to modern musicals. Opera got its start in Italy, around the turn of the century.
