Cockatoo Island, Vernon Ah Kee

The work of Vernon Ah Kee, What is an Aborigine, 2008, installation of 12 drawings. Vernon Ah Kee was born in North Queensland and is of the Kuku Yalandji, Waanji, Yidindji and Gugu Yimithirr peoples. The drawings are in charcoal and pastel and continue his series of portraits of his family. The oversized portraits are hung along one wall of the machine shop (Building 138) - walking the length of this space and gazing into the eyes of each portrait was a moving experience.

Indigenous artist Vernon Ah Kee calls for Indigenous art to be completely dismantled and build up again from scratch – by black fellas. He criticises the way the visual art world works and the ‘whiteness’ within the gallery context.
