Lyme Regis, The Old Fossil Shop c.1891. The remarkable Miss Mary Anning brought fame to Lyme when she discovered an ichthyosaur near Charmouth in 1811. Fossil hunting remains a lucrative industry here to this day. This fossil shop, the first such outlet in the town, was demolished when the road was widened in 1913.
The Geologists’ Association was an early supporter of women’s involvement in science, admitting female members from the outset. This photo is of their excursion to Leith Hill in 1912.
