The Atlas was released in ‘serial form’, and each section was superbly illustrated with original engravings on steel and wood. Prominent Australian artists illustrated the Atlas under the supervision of leading US engraver, Frederick B. Schell of Philadelphia. The  colonial artists and engravers included Ashton, Fullwood, Johnson, Fitler, Cooke and Smedley, who worked on the project for two years  from 1886.
