2016 UNIC Canberra Outreach

UNIC Canberra undertakes outreach with many partners in Australia and the Pacifc highlighting the work of the United Nations. This year there will be a focus on the Sustainable Development Goals - a set of goals that on September 25th 2015, countries adopted to end poverty, protect the planet, and ensure prosperity for all as part of a new sustainable development agenda: http://www.un.org/sustainabledevelopment/sustainable-development-goals/

On 9 August 2016 UNIC Canberra spoke to the Australian Catholic University students across its six campuses via a video conference. Students from Canberra, Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, and Ballarat had the opportunity to learn about the different career avenues with the United Nations. On the 24th May, UNIC Canberra traveled with  Amnesty International Australia to Bilabong High School in southern New South Wales.  The students from the school had invited both the UN and Amnesty to talk to year seven through nine on LGBTI rights.  Students were most interested to hear about the UN's Free and Equal Campaign - and the work  it does in support of the LGBTI community. For more info on the campaign: https://www.unfe.org/

UNIC Canberra took the opportunity to inform the public about the Sustainable Development Goals, which came into force on January 1.   Stopping by our stall, a joint initiative of UNIC Canberra and the Regional UNHCR office, visitors learned about the Sustainable Development Goals discussed which was the most important to them & took a selfie with our stand in SG!

International Day of Commemoration in memory of the victims of the Holocaust  on 27 January. The theme of the commemoration, "The Holocaust and Human Dignity," links Holocaust Remembrance with founding principles of the UN and reaffirms faith in the dignity and worth of every person that is highlighted in the United Nations Charter, as well as the right to live free from discrimination and with equal protection under the law that is enshrined in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.

The celebration also featured traditional fashion show, a Palestinian cultural corner, and a photography exhibition looking at nearly seven decades of UNRWA delivering education services to Palestine refugee children in Jordan, Lebanon, Syria, Gaza and the West Bank.

In a small town in New South Wales there is a small stone school surrounded by 100 year old elm trees. The students of Murringo Primary School and UNIC Canberra spent a happy day discussing, interviewing and filming thoughts on the Sustainable Development Goals - this is the result. Adelaide, 8 June 2016:  The versatility and ease of preparation of pulses were on display at a school cooking class at Kilkenny primary School  with internationally renowned chef Cheong Liew. Adelaide, 8 June 2016.  While the wind whipped the surf up only a short distance away, UNIC Canberra celebrated World Oceans Day 2016 at two primary schools in Adelaide.  At both the Kilkenny and Fulham North primary schools, the young students were quick to put up their hands and engage in a discussion about keeping the oceans free of litter and enjoyed watching a short UNEP video about marine litter.

The annual event brings together close to 1500 students to learn about career opportunities in the legal field. UNIC Canberra was one of twenty organisations represented at the fair. The International Day of Commemoration in Memory of the Victims of the Holocaust was marked in Sydney on 27th January with a moving ceremony at the Sydney Jewish Museum organized by the Australian Association of Jewish Holocaust Survivors and Descendants.
