Tips for Gathering Stretch Fabrics | Megan Nielsen Patterns Blog

So have you ever had trouble getting nice gathers on stretchy fabric? Well here’s my little trick: put a bobbin of elastic thread in your machine instead of your regular thread, and sew two lines of stitches at the longest stitch length. I normally sew them at 3/5″ from the raw edge and just under […]

The Square Circle Skirt (20-ish minutes to make)

Sometimes I buy too much fabric. I admit it. Just don't you dare email my husband and tell him that I've admitted it. ;) If he ever notices that I have purchased new fabric and he happens to ask what it's for........I just mumble and laugh myself through some crazy explanation like, 'oh, it's for this one thing that I'm going to make next week to try out a new technique and I really needed this particular fabric to test it out, and, yeah........isn't it great?!?!' Sometimes I assume everyone knows how to do it. But then I get another email asking how to shir (or smock) fabric. So it reminds me I shouldn't assume..............because it is still one of the top questions I'm asked. And if you've never given this a try, serisously stop eveything right now and try it. It will knock your socks off. It…

No Show Elastic Waistband Tutorial

Here is the tutorial based on a Kwik Sew pattern 3115. First start by measuring your pant waistband and subtract around 2-4" depending on your comfort level for the elastic. Sew the elastic into a circle Quarter and mark the elastic and your waistband Then zigzag the elasic onto the facing side of the waistband. Press and steam, this helps to shrink the elastic a bit more. Here is the elastic stitched down, used a zigzag stitch. Here is a picture of the facing on the inside Now a picture…
